Actually, Spencer is perfect for Toby. With all Toby has been through, he needs someone who is patient, understanding and knows when to back off.
Anyone who has trauma, PTSD, or something else, they need time to process it and deal with it. If they ever do. Some people can't.
For a long time, Toby couldn't. He buried himself in work, drugs, alcohol, men. Whatever he could do to still the thoughts. He wrote in his books. Songs, poems, whatever. But the more he got involved with Spencer, the more he wanted to better himself. Which meant he had to get help. He had to stop burying what happened to him. And Spencer was perfect through it all.
For him anyway.
He never pushed. Well, he did one time but it was necessary. Very much so. He listened. He didn't judge. He let Toby be who he needed to be and deal how he needed to. And it was hard as hell some days.
But Spencer never gave up. And Toby finally had someone in his life who loved him. Scars and all. But Toby had to make up his mind if he could continue to face his past or cave and let it wash him away. When you see someone you love hurting, you want to do everything you can to fix it.
Toby\'s Little Eden and Other Stories : John Flannery :
And sometimes our way of fixing things is dead wrong. Sometimes we have to push a little, but everyone has a way of dealing with what they have to deal with. For us, like Spencer, we have to be patient. We have to keep our mouths shut and just let them know we are willing to listen and be there when they are ready. As hard as that may be. And for Spencer it was hard. We all want to take the pain away. Go beat the hell out of whoever hurt our loved ones. But we can't. I love this book. For Toby, with Spencer he found something he hadn't had in a long time.
He found someone who believed in him. Someone who he could just be with. And for Toby, that was the world. View 2 comments. Jan 14, Kirstin rated it really liked it. Toby is a genius. He started college at 16 and grew up fast. Relying on his advisor, he trusted where he shouldn't have and ended up very emotionally and physically scarred. He just wants to block out the past and move forward, the more nameless the hookup the better. But when he takes a well needed vacation in Bali, he finds that after spending a week with the same man, he feels lost when they part.
He own his own practice with his friend and he's been working himself too hard. When he leaves Toby after a week in Bali, he can't get him out of his head. And when he sees him on TV promoting his new show, he realizes he can't miss an opportunity to see him again. I'll be honest, I didn't really get into this story until about halfway, but then I was consumed. Toby started out a reckless, lost and frankly annoying character who finally realized that in order to get past his pain, he had to confront it.
It was honestly very gratifying to see Toby take the steps to becoming whole. I had to give him credit for his maturity and willingness to 'fix' himself in an effort to have a relationship with Spencer. At first Spencer annoyed me as well because he acted so victimized and small, but with the promise of love from Toby, he too became more confident and less guarded.
Once they found a place where they were grounded the story was so tender and raw. I really enjoyed all of the friends in this story and their drama as well. It's fun to see the beginnings of other stories building up in the background to keep the series moving. The last half of this was done so well. There were so many triggers for Toby that he was able to weather with Spencer at his side and I really felt the relationship as it morphed into a tangible feeling of love. This was definitely a book that I'm thrilled to have read and I'm excited to see the next story, hopefully with Javier.

Toby is indeed a force of nature, a tempestuous character who could wreck havoc to everybody and everything he gets in contact with. It was very clear early on the personalities of the main characters. Toby is the storm, Spencer is the port: steady and calm; maybe physically weak but mentally strong, especially at the second half. Spencer needed to be needed and Toby needed to This novel is aptly named.
Spencer needed to be needed and Toby needed to be taken care of. Typhoon Toby is full of heightened emotions, sometimes even violent ones. There were quiet moments too that helped balance all the angst. I also appreciate the music, dance, and friendships that enlivened the book. Toby has been wisely avoiding love given trauma in his past and has resigned himself to the idea that true intimacy isn't for him. He meets Spencer on a tropical vacation and, though he feels a deep connection to Spencer, sticks with his plan to let it go. A bit of a shaky plan for Toby, who is mildly famous which allows Spencer to find him by happenstance. Spencer couldn't forget him either. This book is mainly about Toby giving a real relationship a try.
